And I lasted all the way to Key Largo before I had to change into flip flops, but I gave it a good run.
This is officially the scene on the crime. About two minutes after promising the lady at the rental car company that I would be the only one driving the car Doug and I made it safely out of the lot and pulled over to switch seats. And we are on our way, life is good!
Approximately 3 hours into our 133 mile drive (it is slow moving on the coastal highway) it became very apparent that we should have probably pulled over for sun screen quite a while back. My husband is bald for god's sake.
But we made it! WooHOO! We look pretty normal in these pictures but let me assure you that under these outfits are some pretty serious farmer tans. I believe this is our karma for lying to the rental car lady.
After a small struggle with the hotel staff they did in fact let us into our room. It was beautiful. Unfortunately I didn't take very many pictures but hopefully you can get the idea.
That night we wanted to go out and cheer on the Hoosiers. So we all put on our red and off we went.
The next day we were rested and ready to take this vacation by the horns. We started with breakfast at the cutest little french cafe.
The Banana Cafe
I had a ratatouille filled crepe topped with a fried egg. It was awesome. I forgot all about taking the picture until I had already devoured the first bite.
Next we went to the Hemingway House.
I really loved it here. The covered balcony and all those windows. I can only imagine what it would be like if there was still a lady living in it. To think It was purchased for only $8,000 in the 1940's I believe but don't quote me on that.
Now the pool on the other hand, his wife had it installed ten years later for $20,000. Not such a good deal. But I thought it looked quite inviting.
Of course we climbed to the top of the light house.
Very fancy vintage Rolls Royce we saw on the street.
And those roosters were everywhere! Where are all the chickens? Seriously?!
Part of the reason that I wanted to go on this beach vacation is that I am completely obsessed with beach cottages these days. Unfortunately I live in the woods in Indiana, and the neighbors would most likely gawk if I started shipping in sand. But I couldn't help but take pictures of a few to share here.
Those covered porches get me every time!
Really who doesn't love a vintage telephone booth?
Next we headed down to the dock to check out Half Shell Raw Bar
The oysters were amazing!
Just down the dock was this cute little yellow house that had a cute little man holding a pie out front. How could we resist?
Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe
Of course we had the Key Lime Pie On A Stick Dipped In Chocolate. Duh.
The next day was St. Patrick's day. We were so blessed to be able to spend the day on the water. It was beautiful. I finally got a little relaxing done.
Later that night the Hoosiers played again. Of course we went out to cheer them on. I must say that I was bleeding Hoosier, because for the very first time since I first heard the words "Irish" and "Whiskey" put together I didn't wear green on St. Patrick's Day. GAAAASSSPP! I wore red. We went to a cute little spot called Rum Barrel.
Wouldn't you know it we met a leprechaun.
Our final day in Key West we finally made it to Blue Heaven we waited an hour and a half. It was worth it though.
Doug ordered a Lobster Omelette that was filled with bacon and topped with key lime hollandaise sauce served with a side of banana bread. Enough said.
We couldn't leave Key West and not go to the famous Sloppy Joe's. So later that day we did just that. There were all sorts of people coming in and out of this open air joint. But my favorite were the old people Red Solo Cup bar craw.
If you don't know why this is so awesome click here.
For our last evening we went on a little sunset cruise.
Key West you have rocked my socks and I can't wait till we meet again.
